UNINSURED MOTORIST BENEFITS
In Minnesota, if a person injured in a motor vehicle accident is entitled to assert an injury claim against a person responsible for the accident, but if the responsible person does not have insurance coverage or leaves the scene of the accident without being identified, the injured person might be entitled to seek Uninsured Motorist benefits. Uninsured Motorist benefits take the place of insurance coverage which the person responsible for the accident should have had.
Generally, the injured person first seeks payment of Uninsured Motorist benefits from the insurance policy covering the motor vehicle the injured person was in at the time of the accident. If that vehicle is not insured or does not have sufficient Uninsured Motorist coverage, the injured person might be able to seek Uninsured Motorist benefits under an insurance policy that names the injured person as an insured or that names a relative the injured person lives with.
