UNDERINSURED MOTORIST BENEFITS
In Minnesota, if an insured motor vehicle that causes an accident does not have enough insurance to fully compensate a person injured in the accident, the injured person might be entitled to receive Underinsured Motorist benefits. Underinsured Motorist benefits are intended to provide potential additional coverage for injury claims over and above the liability insurance policy limits on the motor vehicle that caused the accident.
Generally, the injured person first seeks payment of Underinsured Motorist benefits from the insurance policy covering the motor vehicle the injured person was in at the time of the accident. If Underinsured Motorist benefits are not available or sufficient under the insurance policy covering that vehicle, the injured person might be able to seek Underinsured Motorist benefits under an insurance policy that names the injured person as an insured or that names a relative the injured person lives with.
